Majfara Reef Replacement System

Bahrain’s first official patented1 artificial reef design, the Majfara Reef Replacement System is an artificial reef system designed as both a fish habitat (via the double cavern system) and a host for coral communities (via both natural colonisation and human relocation efforts).

The Majfara was designed to resemble the natural rock formations of the Arabian Gulf and was assessed within physical flume tanks at the UK-based HR Wallingford to validate the stability of the unit in a range of wave conditions and water levels.

¹ The Majfara is registered in Australia under Patent No. 2018287827, in the US under Patent 11,730,148 and is patent pending in the Gulf Cooperation Council

Seamount

The Seamount unit, which is design patented2, has been developed alongside the Majfara unit to primarily facilitate the manual relocation of corals, as well as provide valuable protective space for fish. The large surface area (approximately 5.5 m2) is presented via a series of platforms and contoured surfaces which lend themselves to hosting relocated corals. These platforms can be modified to provide indented attachment points for application of adhesives.

Physical modelling tests have been undertaken to validate the stability of the unit in a range of wave conditions and water levels. The tests were done by UK based HR Wallingford.

² The Seamount design is registered in Australia under design patent 202317111 and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under 12292.

Jebel

The Jebel unit acts as either a stand-alone unit or as a modular system co-joined with the Seamount unit. It offers a higher and more complex structure featuring varying sizes of apertures to encourage settlement and attachment of a variety of organisms.

Reef Ball TM

Reef Arabia is fully trained and authorized through The Reef Ball Foundation to manufacture Reef Balls™ which are the most widely used artificial reef units in the world. Reef Arabia manufactures 5 different types of Reef Balls™

Wind Tower

The Wind Tower has been made by carefully selecting historic architectural features from Arabia that appeal to commercially important demersal species such as hamour (orange spotted grouper) and pelagics such as shari (emperor) and fascar (bream). The result is a reef unit that provides style and function, and one that the Arabian Gulf can proudly call its own.
